Formed in 1987 in response to housing insecurity faced by people living with HIV/AIDS, Liberty United quickly expanded our scope of services to welcome individuals confronting poverty, homelessness, mental illness, addiction, HIV/AIDS and other serious conditions. Liberty offers a variety of programs that are designed to meet each individual's need. Liberty helps their participant's navigate systems of care, offering support and guidance throughout their journey. Our programs and services range from outreach, case management, housing access services and rental assistance to a variety of transitional and permanent housing programs that not only provide a home to those who need one, but offer supportive services. At the end of this year, Liberty United will open Liberty Safe Haven. The opening of Liberty Safe Haven is a historic event since it represents the first and only Safe Haven in Connecticut. A national model, the facility was created as a refuge for hard-to-reach homeless (or chronic homeless), who have experienced repeated and/or extended bouts of homelessness in our community. The 33 efficiency style apartments will offer permanent housing to 22 chronically homeless adults, as well as 11 homeless adults confronting mental illness who are a part of our ODA program. Half of the apartments will be set aside for residents living with HIV/AIDS.
