Steve Jobs passes away

Steve Jobs, Apple’s co-founder and former CEO, has died at the age of 56. Jobs had been diagnosed with an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor (a rare type of pancreatic cancer), and despite a liver transplant in April 2009, his health continued to deteriorate. Jobs’ vision and passion drove Apple to great heights and will certainly have a lasting impact on the world. Apple released the following statement:
Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

Steve Jobs resigns as Apple CEO

Major news in Cupertino this evening– Steve Jobs has resigned as CEO of Apple, citing health reasons. He will remain Chairman, while COO Tim Cook will take over CEO duty. The company’s press release states “Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company.”
Jobs released the following letter:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve Jobs action figure hits the market

If you’ve always wanted to add an Apple reality distortion field to your action figure collection, here’s your chance! The illustrious iCEO, Steve Jobs, has been crafted into miniature form, complete with his trademark black turtleneck shirt, Levi’s 502 jeans, New Balance sneakers, and beard. He also comes with rimless glasses, a mini iPhone 4, and an Apple logo to stand on.
The $79 figurine is highly detailed and even comes with a set of speech bubble cards that you can mount next to him, so your playtime routine can include such gems as “People don’t read anymore,” “I’ve always wanted to own and control the primary technology in everything we do,” “It turns out people want keyboards…we look at the tablet, and we think it is going to fail,” “We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas,” and more.

Why, Not What: Behind Apple’s Reality Distortion Field

Simon Sinek’s TED talk, “How great leaders inspire action.” looks at why Apple succeeds in communicating with consumers where others fail. Instead of focusing on its products, Apple tells people why they design what they do. Once you understand Apple’s purpose — the underlying motivation behind everything they do — then you’ll be open to buying anything they make. You might buy a Dell PC because it’s cheap or has nice specs, but that doesn’t make you any more likely to buy a Dell MP3 player, whereas people convinced of Apple’s dedication to challenging the status quo or making some other statement would be likely to buy not just a Mac, but an iPod, iPad, and anything else.
As Sinek says, “People don’t buy what you do- they buy why you do it.”

Apple unveils iPhone OS 4.0, adds multitasking

Earlier today, Apple unveiled its new iPhone OS, version 4.0. The new software will power the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad and adds a variety of new features to the mix. Chief among these is a form of multitasking, and other “tentpoles” include an Xbox Live replica called “Gaming Center,” enhanced email support, and more:
- Multitasking on iPhone 3GS
- User-changeable wallpaper (something jailbroken users have enjoyed for years)
- Bluetooth keyboard support (from iPad)
- Spell check (also from iPad)
- Tap-based autofocus for video (not just photos) on 3GS
- 5x digital zoom for camera (why?)
- Enhanced playlist support (on-device playlist creation, nested lists)
- iBooks (from iPad)
- App folders (another jailbreak favorite- you can finally sort multiple apps into folders)
- New mail features (unified inbox for multiple accounts, threaded email, in-app attachment viewing, support for multiple MS Exchange accounts)
- Enterprise enhancements (remote device management, wireless app distribution)
- iAd (Apple’s new mobile advertising system, promising more interactive ads than ever before, 60:40 revenue split with Apple)
- Game Center (Apple’s mobile replica of Xbox Live for iPhone games, including matchmaking, achievements, and leaderboards; will launch sometime later this year (after OS 4 launch))

Odd Recipes of the Day: Steve Jobs Cheese Head, iPad Thai

Some people clearly have too much time on their hands. Not that we mind though– here’s the dinner you’ve been waiting so long to make: an edible version of Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ head, made of cheese and black pepper. The Cooks’ Den posted a tutorial on how to create your very own, along with recipes for iPad Thai (shown), Spicy Steve Nachos, and an Apple Cheese Plate. Glasses optional.

Apple vs. Google: Getting Personal

The New York Times just posted an article about the expanding conflict between Google and Apple. Apparently it’s turned into a deep personal conflict between Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Google chief Eric Schmidt. The two were happily cooperating against Microsoft just a few years ago, and most visibly at the launch of the iPhone in 2007, but things have turned sour since, with Google launching the Android mobile OS to compete against the iPhone and Apple entering the mobile advertising space. Google outbid Apple to buy mobile ad firm AdMob, though the FTC is likely to oppose the deal (based on antitrust concerns), so it might not happen after all.
Most interesting is that the head of Microsoft’s online services group has been spotted around Cupertino, leading to speculation that Apple may switch its iPhones, iPods, iPads, and the Safari browser to use Bing by default instead of Google– which would of course be a huge coup for Microsoft’s search group. Apple working with Microsoft to beat Google? Stranger things have happened…

Analysis: Apple iPad – Revolution or Flash in the Pan?

Yesterday, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the company’s highly-anticipated new iPad tablet. How’d it turn out? Well, it’s a good example of “what you see is what you get”– it looks like a giant iPod Touch, and that’s basically what it is. Given the tremendous hype surrounding the tablet, the iPad will probably sell well at launch, but for a number of reasons (detailed below), it’s unlikely to cause any radical shifts in the mobile electronics arena.
