To update the story ...

As of August 2012, Microsoft have no WP8 devices on sale but, in what in marketing terms will go down in history as one of the greatest ever own-goals, has announced that WP7 is not going to be upgradeable to WP8.

Worse still, the differences between wP7 and WP8 are so deep-seated that app developers have decided not to invest time in WP7, preferring to wait on WP8. Major players in the app field have simply drawn a line through their WP7development plans, iced the code in the hope that some of it may be applicable to WP8 (when ever Microsoft get around to letting them see it).

Meanwhile, device manufacturers see no sales in WP9 based devices as the market waits for the real Microsoft OS to be released. Those who do purchase WP7 devices will be trapped in a lagoon of lethargy without the market share to justify customisation by app developers and with Microsoft having cut off the lifeline of upgrade-ability to future WP versions.

As a business strategy, it could have been designed by Apple (to sink the competition). Perhaps the single most costly decision ever made by a US corporation. Goodbye Microsoft?
